The United Church is a historic congregation, the result of the merger of Concordia United Church of Christ (1833) and Union United Methodist Church (1846), and is deeply rooted in the Foggy Bottom/West End community. But we are also a contemporary congregation seeking to meet the spiritual needs of our immediate neighbors in our community and city, as well as do outreach in the wider world. We are a reconciling, open and affirming congregation, welcoming all persons into our life and ministry. Our primary outreach activity is the volunteer-led Foggy Bottom Food Pantry, operated on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month, providing over 150 families with bags of food. In Kerala, India, we sponsor over a dozen students at the Trichur Chaldean Syrian School.
We are unique as a congregation with a vital German-language ministry, providing opportunities for worship, Bible study, and fellowship in the German language and culture. We provide Christian education opportunities primarily in English, with our Adult Forum, which meets Sunday mornings to do Bible study and discuss matters of faith. Additionally there are occasional small groups and events on topics like doing justice; following the way of Jesus; and our popular science and religion program.
Situated in the midst of the George Washington University campus, we are rejuvenating a Protestant campus ministry with students. We envision an innovative new ministry with young adults that integrates social justice, spirituality, and discipleship, in ways that are relevant and engaging. Additionally we welcome all in our neighborhood, but especially young adults, to experience our church as a place to be nurtured in the Christian faith and community.
